Design and Durability

The F181C has a similar design to most of the quadcopters on the market, it does have a small difference though, it has a curvature at the top, which makes it more aerodynamic and it enables it to cut through the air much faster. It is also fitted with a flashlight at the front so you have better visibility if you want to fly in dark areas.

The drone’s body frame is light but durable enough to handle mini crashes and collisions. The weight of this quadcopter drone is less than 0.5lb so no registration is required for this model on FAA. Based on customer reviews, only three out of ten buyers encountered problems with damage due to crashing and because banging into things is probably inevitable at some point Holy Stone F181 parts are readily available to buy from the manufacturer’s website.

Camera

If you are looking for a Quadcopter with a camera, then you will be pleased by the 2MP camera fitted in the F181C model. Aside from recording videos, the camera can take snaps of 720p resolution. These images and videos are stored on a 2GB SD card that comes with quadcopter. The camera can tilt quite easily to allow for a better angle of video. The quality of video is good.  The altitude hold function helps keep the Quad stable when you want to take a photo or video a specific scene.

Battery and Flight Time

It takes about one hour for the F181C drone to charge to full capacity, there is a usb charging capability and you can fly for up to 10 minutes on one battery charge, depending on variables like using the camera or flying fast. To combat this the F181C comes with 2 batteries so if you have them both charged you can have twice the flying time. The F181C quadcopter manual does however recommend that you let the motors cool down between changes in battery so they don’t overheat.

Controller

This quadcopter drone isn’t controlled via your phone and so the transmitter comes with a small screen to display the drone’s configurations such as sensitivity level, recording status and quality of the signal. The control unit has standard levers to control the direction of flight and buttons that let you do flips and to be able to set the altitude hold function which makes it much easier to control for beginners.

Flight Performance

If you are accustomed to flying quadcopters with manual controllers, then this Holy Stone F181 RC Quadcopter Drone won’t have any surprises for you. Once you have worked out how to do the extras like the speed control. This drone has 4 flight speeds although the fast isn’t super fast but you wouldn’t want that if you’re trying to take pictures or get a video. It is very responsive to the controls and once you feel comfortable you can work your way up through the speed levels without the worry of crashing your drone.

The 6-axis headless gyro system gives a stable flight and there is a headless option so you can easily fly the F181C if you can’t work out the front when it is at a distance from you. Once you apply this function the drone will think forwards and backwards is in relation to the control unit. You can perform an array of drills with this drone including 360-degree rotations, full airborne spins and other similar stunts. There are lights on the drone which makes it easy to identify in the dark.

Customer Opinion

Customers feel that this flies very smoothly, the headless function is great and the flips are amazing. They have found that it stands up very well to collisions and that if anything breaks and you need help the customer service is very good. It takes good pictures and videos which don’t take long to download and watch.

The negatives found are some people found that the motor burned out quickly although the company seems to be very good at replacing anything that doesn’t work and people thought the instructions were worthless although there are some good youtube videos that can help.

Verdict

This small-sized Holy Stone F181 RC Quadcopter Drone is a good choice if you’re looking for a drone on the cheaper side. If you’re a learner you don’t want to pay a lot of money until you become more proficient in flying and there are plenty of features on this drone that can help you learn how to control it easily. With the on board camera you can take unforgettable footage which you can save to a memory card on board. If you want to compare it to another drone with a camera, read our review on the DBPOWER UDI U818A Wi-Fi FPV Quadcopter Drone.
