Force1 U45W Blue Jay Overview
The Blue Jay Drone is black moulded with 2 blue propellors and 2 black which helps identify front and back of the drone. It’s 14.17 x 14.17 inches with a height of 4 inches. It comes with blade guards and landing gear to protect it from damage if you have a collision.
It comes with a remote control which has 2 control levers and some simple push buttons and it has a phone holder so that you can set up your smartphone for FPV(first person view). This allows you to see what the camera can see which makes it easier when taking photographs and making your aerial videos.
The drone has wifi capability and uses a downloadable U45 Blue Jay app to control not only the camera options but you can also set up the flying controls on the phone screen so you can use this instead of the remote control.
You have a 4GB SanDisk Micro SD Card and a reader included in the box so you can start saving your recordings from your first flight. The Blue Jay has helpful features making it easier to fly if you’re a beginner and 2 speeds and 360 flips for flyers with a bit more experience.
The flying time on one battery is around 8 minutes and you get double that because 2 batteries are included with a usb charging bank to allow you to charge on the go.
There are led lights on the drone that you can switch on or off but they look cool if you’re flying in low light.
You can buy U45 Blue Jay Parts on Amazon.com if you need them so you can keep on flying if you have some breakages.
VR Headset Capability
One of the great features of this Force1 U45W Blue Jay is the capability to use it with a VR headset. You can buy the UDI 3D VR Headset at the same time as your drone from Amazon.com at a reasonable cost if you don’t already own one. Using this VR Headset you can feel as if you are in the cockpit itself.
It’s worth having a friend with you to work the controls while you get the most out of the experience. If you fly it yourself with the headset on you have to remember that there might be a slight delay in the time for the information to get from drone to the headset so you could fly into a tree before you see it on screen.
The flying modes available on this Blue Jay drone make it worth the money you pay. There is the one button take off and landing which is very helpful for beginners. There are 2 flying speeds so you can start off slow till you feel comfortable with the controls or if you’re in a more enclosed space then speed up as you become more expert, or if you’re a kid who are born experts.
There is the headless mode which gives you a bit of security if you feel you are losing control or can’t get the hang of the orientation. You can use the app to fly the drone with 2 controls on the screen of your phone and all the button functions on the remote control are there on the screen too. You can also set it to tilt mode and control it by tilting the phone the direction you want to go.
You have the altitude hold which holds it in place wherever you are, this is another way to feel in control or just to take a minute to take stock of the orientation. You can stay in better positions for taking videos too. One thing you can do on this app is the on screen custom flight path. What this does is allow you to draw a pattern on the screen and your drone will fly in that pattern.
When you’re ready to show off you can do 3D flips in the direction of your choice with the press of a button.
The camera sits at the base of the Blue Jay drone. It can take photographs and video in flight and has 720p HD resolution giving good quality details in your pictures or videos. This is perfectly suitable for home videos although not at a professional level.
The angle of the camera lens can be changed slightly up or down. With FPV you can see with a birds eye view and the altitude hold makes it easier to take the picture or the video that you want. You can start and stop your video’s or take a picture at the press of a button on your phone screen via the app.
Although there are a lot of controls on this Force1 drone it doesn’t have a return to home button which some people feel it should have. In the customer reviews on Amazon.com there are customers who have lost control of the drones and they have flown off. This can happen if you fly out of range and if the altitude hold button, auto land button or headless mode can’t be used to stop and return then a return button probably wouldn’t either. It’s worth being aware of where your 100 meter limit is so you can stay well within it.
Lack of movement on camera
The camera on this Blue Jay is good quality but the fact that you can’t move it much is a shame. You can adjust the lens angle a little bit up or down but that’s your lot. People feel that a gimbal mount or tilt mechanism would be better.
Short range and fly time
The fly time is only around 8 minutes and the range is 320 feet or 100 meters where for less than double the price you can get a F100 Ghost Drone with Camera which has a 500 meter range and 13-15 minute fly time. You will just have to try and be aware of the distances around you so you don’t lose connection. 2 batteries do come in the box though and you can buy more for a longer flying time.
The Force1 U45W Blue Jay is a great value drone considering the features included. The cons aren’t really overwhelming and it does have a good star rating. If you want to learn to fly and get experience with aerial photography too this is a good drone to start with and you’ll have a lot of fun learning.
