DJI – Mavic Pro Review

Features

  • Fly for miles. From your pocket. Inside the Mavic’s pocket-sized remote controller is DJI’s brand new OcuSync transmission technology, with a range of 4.3mi (7km) and Full HD 1080p video streaming.
  • No bumps and scrapes. When you know what’s in front of you, you won’t bump into it. The same is true of the Mavic. Using Flight Autonomy it can see obstacles as far away as 49ft (15m) in front.
Absolute Precision Flight Autonomy technology means the Mavic can hover precisely in more environments, and automatically land almost exactly where you took off.
  • Stay flying longer. Why fly for 10 or 15 minutes when you can fly for up to 27? With the Mavic you can. Finely tuned control
  • Use every single pixel. The Mavic is the only drone of its size to carry an integrated high-precision 3-axis mechanical camera stabilization system. Operating Temperature Range:32° to 104° F (0° to 40° C)
  • Includes: DJI Mavic Pro Quadcopter [US Version], Battery, 16GB microSD, Propeller pairs x3, Remote Controller

When you receive your DJI Mavic Pro you will need to do a small bit of assembly putting on the propellers, adding the battery and don’t forget to insert your SD card to save your footage. Today we are looking at the Grey option but you can also buy the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum for a little extra money.

Portability

The Mavic Pro can fold up quite small so it could fit in a large coat pocket or a backpack which makes it easy to carry around with you so you’re always ready to fly. If you know you are going to be travelling a lot to film you can buy the DJI Mavic Pro fly more combo which gives you a shoulder bag,2 propellers, 2 extra batteries, a charging hub and a car charger so that you can always have a charged battery at the ready and keep them all together in your shoulder bag.

Controller

The controller is a small size too with 2 folding arms which will hold your phone or tablet and 2 folding antennas on the top. There is a cable to attach your phone to the controller, you will need to download the DJI app to link to the drone. The controller has 2 control sticks, on button, return to home button, LCD screen for the drone and controller status, a pause button, 2 buttons that can be configured via the app to suit you. You have camera dedicated buttons for the gimbal, camera settings, record and shutter.

Inside the controller is the new OcuSync transmission technology which allows the drone to fly up to 4.3 miles away and still maintain a 720p connection which is pretty impressive.
Before you fly for the first time you will want to calibrate all the GPS settings, the flying height and distance settings, the return to home and the camera settings and then you are ready to fly. Make sure you know the laws in your area for drone flying.

Speed and flying time

You have 2 flying modes, standard and sport and the speed the drone can fly at is 40mph standard and 65mph in sport mode. You also get up to 27 minutes on one battery charge which is ample time to get some good footage and you can get longer if you have a spare battery. You can set up obstacle sensors in the settings if you want the drone to avoid or brake when detecting an obstacle in it’s path while flying to help you to avoid crashing.

Camera

The 4k camera on the DJI Mavic Pro is quite small and is housed in a 3 axis gimbal which keeps the camera surprisingly steady when flying. Get amazingly clear photos and smooth video footage without effort with 4k video at 30fps. You can stream 720p video at long range and Full HD 1080p at close range so you can send your footage through Facebook live if you want to.

Smart features

Tapfly – If you’re a beginner and struggle to keep the drone flying steady while making video then Tapfly can help, just tap on the screen where you want the drone to go and it will fly there while you concentrate on getting the best shots.

Trace – You can set the drone to follow you from behind or in front of you as you move along

Spotlight – This setting will keep you or the person you want in the frame at all times.

Profile – This will follow alongside your profile.

All of these settings a great assets to allow you to take video of people or yourself as you are doing activities.

Gesture control – There is a gesture control feature where you can wave and get the drones attention, show it a picture frame with your fingers and it will take a selfie.

Tripod mode – If you want to take a photo and need to slow things down flip on Tripod mode whether indoors or out and it slows down every movement on the Mavic to make it easier.

DJI Mavic Pro Price

The DJI Mavic Pro price is under $800 which is good for a professional grade drone but it depends on whether you want extras as there is the DJI Mavic Pro Combo full bundle that gives you most of the accessories you might ever need all in one.

Customer Opinion

The things buyers have liked the most about this drone is the fact it is so compact in size so can easily be carried, the obstacle avoidance mode can help avoid user error and the quality of shots from the 4k camera. Most people are just amazed at all the things the Mavic Pro can do.

I think the biggest thing that customers don’t like is the customer service response when they have had problems but customers who have bought through Amazon have 30 day return and some people have used that to their benefit. Some people have had problems with the gimbal and sensors not working. Other people have had issues with the controller not connecting to the drone.

Verdict

This DJI – Mavic Pro Quadcopter with Remote Controller offers so much technology in a small foldable drone, no wonder it is one the favourite buys especially by professionals. It’s portable, easy to use, has plenty of speed, can work well at a distance, takes crisp steady footage and has plenty of smart features for creative videos. If you’re waiting for the new version the DJI Mavic Pro 2 it could be another month or two yet. If you’re interested in buying then check out the DJI Mavic Pro Amazon price which is usually competitive and often has special offers. There is probably much more about the Mavic Pro that I’ve missed out of this review so..

This year at the CES 2018 they featured a lot of drones. DJI even announced a new drone the DJI Mavic Air which stood out among other drones. DJI are a known world wide for providing drones with aerial imaging technology and for their civilian drones. We’ll be looking at the features of this new drone so keep reading to see if it lives up to the hype..

Check out the DJI Mavic Air, Onyx Black Portable Quadcopter Drone if you’re looking for a portable drone.

DJI Mavic Air, Onyx Black Portable Quadcopter Drone Review

Features

Portable

The Mavic Air was developed for people who like to travel and capture the outdoors. If you’re out and about and like to take a drone with the to capture the moment then you will love this drone which can fold up making it ultra-portable. Being a DJI drone it can deliver high performance results and it boasts more intelligent features than a lot of drones made for the consumer market. No matter what you want to explore this Mavic Air drone will enable you to do it.

Design

When they have designed this drone, DJI have taken the portability of the Mavic Pro and the fact that it can fold up and improved the footprint so the Mavic Air is even smaller and more portable. It’s half the size folded of the Mavic Pro, about the size of a small tablet. The arms fold in towards the aerodynamic body flush which is precision designing at it’s best. If you’re wearing a jacket with large pockets then you will probably be able to carry the Mavic Air in your pocket.

The best thing is it only weighs around a pound so you’re not going to feel overloaded carrying it around. You’re biggest problem is going to be that you might forget it’s in your pocket because it is so light. It’s pretty impressive and it doesn’t affect it’s high-end performance and functionality.

Specs

If you’ve already used a Mavic Pro then you will feel comfortable with the DJI Mavic Air because it has similar specs, but in my opinion the Mavic Air is an improvement.

When it comes to video you can shoot 4k with the Mavic Air at 24 or 30 frames per second at UHD quality and you have the capability of taking pictures that are 12-megapixel with a wide angle 24mm f2.8 lens. There are new HDR algorithms so it can help you get the right exposure in different light conditions. It uses more natural transitions in dark and overexposed areas giving better pictures.

If you like recording fast action sports and activities the Mavic Air offers support for recording 1080p 120 fps slow-motion video so you can enjoy every moment. It has the ability to fly at 42.5 mph and it can deal with winds that are blowing up to 22 mph. DJI have redesigned the antenna so you now have a 2.5 mile range.

To make the Mavic Air smaller they have designed a gimbal system that is recessed into the body of the drone, it’s a 3-axis mechanical gimbal with reduced angular vibration. It’s set in a triangular formations with gimbal dampeners so you can get even steadier shots.

There is internal storage of 8GB so you don’t have to save everything to a micro sd card unless you want to film loads but you have a card slot so you can use both if you need to.

Foldable remote controller

The DJI Mavic Air comes with a foldable remote controller which has a low profile design and holds your smartphone easily. The control sticks are removable and can be stored in the remote controller to make it as portable as the drone.

Here is a list of the full specs that I managed to find:

24mm F2.8 lens

Three-axis stabilized 4K camera

Foldable body

Increased signal coverage

New ventilation system that will help prevent overheating

Can reach speeds up to 42.5 mph

Has a 2.5 mile range

Offers a flight time of up to 21-minutes

Is capable of flying up to 16,000 feet above sea level

Built-in 8GB of storage with a MicroSD expansion

Optional remote that has been designed for portability (the thumbsticks are removable)

USB-C port

Available in a total of three colors: Black, white, and red

Flight Time

Having a good, long flight time means you have more time to capture what you need and the Mavic Air gives you up to 21 minutes, improving on many other drones and it doesn’t take ages to recharge it either only 55 minutes with a charging hub or a standard USB charger.

Customer Opinion

Customers have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of the drone and the footage you can take. They love the fact that it can be folded up small and carried in small bag without fear of damage to the propellers. They have found it to be responsive when flying and the beginner mode is worth using when you’re learning. The intuitive technology makes it very easy to fly. There are lots of positive reviews.

On the downside some people have had issues with calibrating the drone and some received damaged goods and had to return and some have had problems with the joystick. We recommend buying from Amazon.com where you have a 30 day return period if you have any problems.

Verdict

The DJI Mavic Air is a quadcopter drone that is going to appeal to all people who like to travel and capture it all on aerial video footage or in picture form. It’s a great tool for Youtuber’s and people who love to take action footage of themselves or others and the flight time helps with this.
